Waimea

Waimea sits at lofty 2,500 feet in elevation on the slopes of the Kohala Mountains. It's where clouds roll in from the back of Waipio Valley and settle on green volcanic cindercones called puu (hills). Its name means reddish water, which refers to the tint given to the streams after filtering through the hapuu (fern) forests of the Kohala Mountains. This is where picket fences, flower gardens and sprawling yards abound. There are no tiny property margins here; you've got space in which to stretch and cool, fresh air to breathe. This is the home of the Hawaii paniolo (cowboy). All you need to do is turn a 360, and you'll know it.
