Sea Talk: False Killer Whales in Maui Nui

November 14, 2018

Sea Talks take place at the Open Ocean exhibit, doors open after 5:30pm. Seating is limited, advance reservations are recommended.

False killer whales (Pseudorca crassidens) are a large species of dolphin and one of a group of dolphins known as the "blackfish". They get their namesake from the resemblance of their skull to that of killer whales (orcas). In Hawaii, there are three populations of false killer whales, named for where they reside: offshore (pelagic), Northwestern Hawaiian Islands, and the Main Hawaiian Islands Insular population.

Pacific Whale Foundation's research focuses on the approximately 200 individuals of the Main Hawaiian Islands Insular Population. This population is listed as endangered under the U.S. Endangered Species Act due to its extremely small population size and limited range. This endangered status and current threats to the population have made it the new research priority species for Pacific Whale Foundation. In addition to providing an overview on the species, this presentation will discuss Pacific Whale Foundation's new rapid response program and detail their false killer whale research which involves collecting photos to identify individuals, underwater footage to record behaviors and assess scar patterns and UAV footage to measure body size and condition.

FREE! Seating is limited, call (808) 270-7075 or email info@mauioceancenter.com to reserve your spot.
