April 21, 2018
In celebration of Earth Day and the beloved islands we call home, Sea Life Park will be hosting its annual community beach cleanup directly across from the Park on Saturday, April 21, 2018. The first 100 beach cleanup participants to register and lend their kokua in keeping Hawaii's shoreline pristine will be granted free admission to the Park's Earth Day festivities. All other registered participants will be treated to 50 percent off park admission.
In addition to the beach cleanup, Sea Life Park has partnered with Mālama Na Honu to encourage community members to learn more about its important conservation efforts and to witness two Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles released into the ocean. Students from Mālama Honua Public Charter School will join the community celebration by being a part of naming the sea turtles. The official names for the honu will be announced in the days leading up to the release event.
In commemoration of Earth Day and the Park's longstanding tradition of sustainability, Sea Life Park will abstain from selling or providing single-use plastics on property.
The schedule of events surrounding the celebration includes:
-8:30 a.m. Start of Beach Cleanup at Kaupo Bay
-11:30 a.m. Hawaiian Blessing and Honu Release
-12-3 p.m. Activities in the Park including Mahalo music and fun
Earth Day festivities at the Park will include a mahalo celebration for the community's help featuring music, craft beer, as well as fun and educational activities from community groups committed to raising awareness of the effects of single-use plastics on marine life. Cleanup volunteers are asked to bring their own bucket instead of plastic bags to store trash, as well as gloves and other protective equipment.
For free admission, participants must RSVP by April 20 and check-in with the SLP Education Team at the beach cleanup site. For discounted admission, participants must check-in on the day of the beach cleanup.
