Aloha Festivals, the largest Hawaiian cultural celebration in the United States, announces its 2018 event schedule. Throughout the month of September, visitors and residents will be treated to a spectacular celebration of the Hawaiian culture through four signature events: the Royal Court Investiture, Opening Ceremony, the 66th Annual Waikiki Hoolaulea and the 72nd Annual Flora Parade. In partnership with Aloha Festivals, Pearlridge Center will also host the Pearlridge Keiki Hoolaulea. This year's theme is "No Ke Kai Kakou E - We Are of the Sea." The theme honors the seas and oceans that have shaped the Hawaiian Islands, provide sustenance and recreation to its people, and ultimately serve as the unpaved highways that connect the entire human race.
Schedule is as follows:
Royal Court Investiture & Opening Ceremony
September 1 | 4 p.m. Investiture; 5-6 p.m. Opening Ceremony
Modeled after the royal ceremonies of ancient Hawaii, the Royal Court Investiture will be held on the grounds of Helumoa, the historic home of Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop. The ceremony marks the beginning of the 2018 Aloha Festivals where the king, queen, prince and princess take their place on the royal court. The Alii court members will receive their royal cloaks, helmets, head feather lei and other symbols of their reign at Royal Hawaiian Hotel's Coconut Grove. The procession then makes its way to Royal Hawaiian Center's Royal Grove, where traditional hula, chants and musical performances at center stage make for a special evening in the heart of Waikiki.
Pearlridge Keiki Hoolaulea
September 15, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. | Pearlridge Center - Uptown
In partnership with Aloha Festivals, Pearlridge Center will hold the 2018 Keiki Hoolaulea - a free, full-day event perfect for families and their keiki (children). Musical groups and hula halau (hula schools) will take to the stage throughout the day, while arts and crafts stations, demonstrations and other activities provide families with a Saturday full of fun.
66th Annual Waikiki Hoolaulea
September 22, 7-10 p.m. | Kalakaua Avenue
Aloha Festivals hosts Hawaii's largest block party with the 66th Annual Waikiki Hoolaulea. Unlike any other event throughout the year, Waikiki's beachfront Kalakaua Avenue will be transformed with booths highlighting Hawaii cuisine, crafts and culture. Stage performances will take place showcasing the best local music and hula halau, while thousands take to the streets to enjoy the energy under the Waikiki starlight.
72nd Annual Floral Parade
September 29, 9 a.m.-noon | From Ala Moana Park through Kalakaua Avenue to Kapiolani Park
The 72nd Annual Floral Parade, which concludes the Aloha Festivals, unites the Hawaii community for a colorful procession of Hawaiian culture. Intricate and vibrant floral floats will make their way through Waikiki, men and women on horseback will showcase the traditional art of Pau Riding, and the royal court will make their final grand appearance.
