Celebrating 26 years of exquisite woodworking, Hawaii's Woodshow attracts talented woodworkers from Hawaii and abroad with elegant and thoughtful creations across numerous design disciplines including furniture, woodturning, sculpture and musical instruments. Sponsored by the Hawaii Forest Industry Association (HFIA), Hawaii's Woodshow unveils its 2018 exhibition on Saturday, September 22 through Monday, October 8 at the Honolulu Museum of Art School Main Gallery (Linekona Gallery).
Launched in 1993, Hawaii's Woodshow is the premier exhibition of fine heirloom-quality wood creations that shift attention from precious native resources to more readily available Hawaii-grown tree species forwarding the importance of responsible forest management. The vision of the show's founder and HFIA's first President, Peter Simmons, centered on developing a woodworking exhibition that could serve as a catalyst for needed change on koa demands. Early goals focused on developing a high-profile venue to showcase Hawaii's woodworkers, tasking these talented artisans to explore the palette of wood from many non-native, Hawaii-grown tree species and provide an educational story centered on the role of the forest in Hawaii's culture, economy and ecology.
Fast-forward 26 years, the Hawaii Forest Industry Association through its premier gallery show has successfully assisted in linking care of forests in Hawaii with an appreciation for its harvested products.
Hawaii's Woodshow tells the story of forest habitat, conservation and sustainability by limiting the types of wood allowed. Woods from rare, lesser known and/or endangered species are not allowed.
Hawaii's Woodshow attendees will be amazed by the beautiful pieces crafted from Hawaii-grown woods including Koa, Mango, Milo, Norfolk Pine and Macadamia. Educating the public through these inspired entries, educational displays and woodworking demos brings much needed attention to responsible forest management and increasing business with Hawaii's forest industry now estimated at $30+ million a year.
