July 1-15, 2018
School is out, but the joy of music education continues through Hawaii Youth Symphony's 2018 Summer Programs, providing fun and enriching opportunities for students at every skill level. The Summer Strings Program returns June 4-July 3, and instruction at the Pacific Music Institute will be offered July 1-15. PMI will additionally introduce new programming inspired by the organization's commitment to making music a right, not a privilege, for Hawaii's youth.
The Pacific Music Institute, an intensive summer program designed for intermediate to advanced students, will expand upon its core band and orchestra programs and also open doors to even younger string players with a certain level of proficiency. During this summer's PMI, the Hawaii Youth Symphony will be launching the following new programs:
-Solo & String Quartet (SSQ) Program (Grades 6-12): The Solo & String Quartet Program is open to students playing orchestral string instruments (violin, viola and cello) who wish to learn the fundamentals of performing as part of a chamber ensemble. Students will receive individualized attention from inspiring top-caliber Mainland and local faculty, including renowned artists Khullip Jeong (violin professor at the Juilliard School Pre-College), Parry Karp (cello professor at University of Wisconsin), Eugene Chukhlov (associate concertmaster, San Francisco Chamber Orchestra), Ga Hyun Cho (First Prize winner in the Max Rostal International Violin Competition), Helen Liu (violinist, Galliard String Quartet) and Colin Belisle (violist, Galliard String Quartet).
-Junior Strings (Grades 6-7): The Junior Strings Program is open to students playing orchestral string instruments who would like to further their orchestral experience. Additionally, the program strives to encourage students' creativity within a "jam session-style" setting without sheet music in order to further develop their improvisational skills and venture beyond their repertoire of traditional classical music.
-The Combo (Grades 8-12): The Combo Program is open to intermediate and advanced students playing jazz instruments (i.e. saxophone, trombone, trumpet) wishing to try other genres of music prevalent in popular culture, commericals and other contemporary jazz styles. Prior jazz or improvisational experience is not required and the program is also open to students playing rhythm instruments (i.e. piano/keyboard, electric/acoustic guitar, electric/acoustic bass, drums and percussion instruments). While this new program starts in July with other PMI summer offerings, there will also be opportunities to continue The Combo instruction throughout the school year.
In addition, any student entering grades 8-12 with at least two years of experience playing concert band and orchestral string instruments, can participate in the core sessions. No audition is needed to register for the core sessions.
