Makahiki Festival & Ke ‘Alohi Hula Competition

November 10, 2018

Bring in the Hawaiian New Year at Waimea Valley's annual festival of food, games, music and Ke‘alohi Hula, Hawaii's only co-ed hula competition.

Various hālau hula will come together to vie for the title of "Ke ‘Alohi Hula o Waimea" or "The Brilliant Hula Dancer of Waimea," more popularly known as Ke ‘Alohi.

Waimea Valley is a wahi pana, home to many traditions of the Hawaiian people. Growing sweet potato, breadfruit and other native foods, as well as celebrating the Makahiki, Ke ‘Alohi became a very important part of the restored Makahiki celebration in the Valley, as it also gave continuity to traditions of the Hawaiian people through ‘oli, hula, ancient games, crafts and food.
