In the mid-20th century, Maui Pineapple Cannery was an iconic landmark for Lahaina and vital source of employment for Maui residents. Situated on Front Street between Mala Wharf and Honoapi‘ilani Highway, the cannery stood as an empty shell from the 1960s to 1980s after Maui Pineapple Co. moved its operation to Kahului.
In 1987, the cannery was renovated and repurposed to become Lahaina Cannery Mall. The building’s exterior still resembles the working cannery while inside is Maui’s only fully enclosed and air-conditioned shopping center. Featuring 25 specialty, apparel, jewelry and convenience stores, the mall also offers Pineapple Court, a food court with six quick-service cafes. The mall is anchored by Safeway grocery store, open 24 hours a day, and Long’s Drugs, a CVS store.
At the heart of the mall is a large center stage where many activities and community events happen year-round. Every Saturday and Sunday from 1-2 p.m., enjoy popular Polynesian style hula shows with young dancers and musicians. ‘Ukulele lessons are provided on Tuesday evenings 5:45-6:45 p.m., and hula lessons are given on Thursdays 5-6 p.m. All activities are complimentary.
An expansive, open-air parking lot is conveniently located around the mall with complimentary parking. Maui Bus stops at the mall entrance several times a day. Lahaina Cannery Mall is open from 9:30 am to 9 pm Mon-Sat and to 7 pm on Sun. 1221 Honoapi‘ilani Highway; 808-661-5304 lahainacannerymall.com.
