Protestant missionaries arrived in Waimea in 1820 and helped families including King Kaumuali’i (Last King of Kauai) and his wife Queen Deborah Kapule. After the King was abducted and taken to Oahu his Queen converted to Christianity, left Waimea and created a grass hut at end of the Wailua River in 1836. When the Queen Kapule passed in 1853, the hut was replaced with a wooden building, then dismantled and moved to the current location in Kapaa in 1880. The wooden building was finally updated in 1948 to the beautiful church it is now.
