Ellison Onizuka was was the first Japanese American astronaut from Kona, who was unfortunately lost with 6 other astronauts on the Challenger Space Shuttle on January 28, 1986. Onizuka attended Konawaena High School on the Big Island and was a member of the The Hawaii Boy Scouts of America and achieved the highest rank of Eagle Scout.
Onizuka went to the University of Colorado at Boulder and received an Aerospace Engineering degree and then a Master of Science degree in December 1969. Ellison then entered the U.S. Air Force as a flight test engineer at McClellan Air Force Base and later joined NASA on the Orbiter test team in 1978. Hawaii’s largest STEM event was named Onizuka Day of Exploration to honor him.
The Aloha Council, Boy Scouts of America partnered with the University of Hawaii West Oahu to put on the largest STEM event on Oahu. This fun filled day will have over 100+ educational hands-on exhibits all for FREE! They will be featuring robotics, coding, 3D printing, gaming, cyber security, creative media and renewable energy! Lots of live demonstrations, workshops and experts will be talking about careers so feel free to ask them any questions you might have. The Uluniu Project started by UH West Oahu is developing food security and cultural rejuvenation by sharing the many uses of niu (coconut) and ‘ulu (breadfruit) as cultural rejuvenation through ike kupuna (elder wisdom) and ike aina (learning from the land). Hawaiian culture, sustainability and exploring the connection Hawaiians have to the aina (land) will be highlighted since Saturday, April 22 is Earth Day.
