Traveling to the Big Island during Covid: Why Now Through May is the Best Time to Go!
There are so many questions surrounding travel right now. Is it safe to travel? How hard is it to deal with all the safety and testing requirements? Will it be worth it when I get to the destination?
The answers are:
-We can’t provide that answer. That’s your call. However, we will tell you that when you get to Hawaii Island (Big Island) you’ll be in a place that has an extraordinarily low Covid-19 case count relative to the rest of the United States. In the two days prior to this posting, there was a total of one new case reported.
-Reports on the Safe Travels Program in getting to Hawaii are that the program has thus far been pretty smooth. A few people got caught up in a situation where they didn’t receive their negative test in time, but for the vast majority of travelers they’ve been able to navigate the process successfully. You can check into the process by visiting https://travel.hawaii.gov/#/
-In the case of the Big Island, the answer is a resounding “yes” according to many businesses and locals we’ve contacted.
“A lot of tourism based businesses are open for business”, says Kona Style Owner Alika McGuire, a tour boat operator out of Kailua-Kona. “We have been operating our snorkel and manta ray tours at 50% capacity and the feedback from our guests has been tremendous. Some have commented that they feel like they’re on a private charter.”
While some businesses remain shuttered, enough are open to meet the current demand, and capacity will continue to grow as the numbers of tourists increase. Which leads to why now through May might be the best time to visit Hawaii Island (known as the Big Island) in a generation.
In December, 2020 48,134 people visited the Big Island versus 177,912 in December of 2019. If you visit now, you’ll be rewarded with uncrowded beaches and resorts, open tables at restaurants, open fairways on the golf courses and great rates.
The expense of the Covid-19 tests can easily be made up by the low airfare and hotel rates as these industries compete for fewer customers.
A vacation on the Big Island always guarantees lifetime memories- seeing the most active volcano in the world, experiencing the most diverse land mass anywhere (the Big Island has more Koppen Climate Zones than any similar sized place on the planet), and walking on green and black sand beaches. But for the next few months, you can experience it in a way that makes you feel like you’re experiencing it in an earlier time.
“You have to go back more than a generation to see visitor counts as low as we have now”, adds McGuire. “This is truly a unique opportunity to experience our island with even more peace and tranquility that you would normally find.”
Which leads to the last point: why now through May is your window of opportunity. Travel agencies and hotel companies are reporting that post Memorial Day is when tourism numbers will jump substantially in Hawaii. Now through May is your chance to have a truly unique vacation experience.
