Akaku Upstairs Presents: Superheroes in Cinema — Comics on the Big Screen

July 18, 2019

Superhero movies from powerhouse publishers like Marvel and DC Comics have dominated the film market for more than a decade, taking in more money than any other film genre. Barry Wurst, II is a self-described geek who teaches film study classes at UH Maui College and founded the Hawaii Film Critics Society. He will share his unique perspective on the plethora of films out which are based on comic book characters.

Using a reel of Superhero movie clips created with the help of longtime Akaku producer and Hawaii filmmaker, Bob Stone, to illustrate his presentation, Barry will talk about the long history of comics that have made the leap from newsprint to film as well as the recent explosion in cinema’s most popular genre. He’ll discuss why these films are important and what they say about our society today.

Salons are held Thursday evenings from 6-7:30pm in the Akakū Media Lab, 333 Dairy Road, Suite 204, in Kahului, just upstairs from the Akakū TV studios and KAKU Radio.

To RSVP go to www.akaku.org/salons or call 808-871-5554.
