January 4-31, 2020
The 13th annual Honolulu Bollywood Film Festival returns to the Doris Duke Theatre starting January 4 with a monthlong showcase of Indian and South Asian cinema. This year’s lineup includes Hindi blockbusters alongside new and provocative works by emerging talents that celebrate the richness and diversity of India’s culture. Festival picks include films that expand the confines of the traditional Bollywood rubric by illustrating current cultural themes of diversity and female empowerment, and feature new voices in Indian and South Asian cinema such as non-Hindi language films (like Tamil and Ladakh) and LBGTQ+ characters.
An opening night reception on Saturday, January 4 features the film Panipat, an epic war drama, which screens at 7:30pm. Reception tickets include an Indian feast served before the film, a dance workshop by local Bollywood troupe Aaja Nachle Hawaii, and complimentary henna in the HoMA Shop. Reception tickets can be purchased here.
On Sunday, January 12, Aaja Nachle Hawaii presents Talaash: A Quest, a spirited concert showcasing various forms of Bollywood dance. From top Bollywood numbers, Indian folk, classical traditions and sensuous fusions, this talaash (quest) will navigate the many moods of the genre. Tickets and more information here.
In addition to Panipat and Talaash: A Quest, the Bollywood Film Festival 2020 includes the film Saand Ki Aankh, a true story of women sharpshooters, Bombay Rose, an animated film illustrating urban realities interwoven with dream worlds inspired by Indian folk art, Kattumaram, representative of the emerging queer cinema from South India, and Mission Mangal, based on the triumphant true story of India’s first mission to Mars.
