Molokini

Hawaii has a multitude of natural resources, one of the most revered being its marine life. Throughout the state, Marine Life Conservation Districts (MLCD) were established to conserve and replenish these fragile marine resources.

On Maui, snorkeling and Molokini go hand-in-hand. Designated a State Marine Life Conservation District in 1977, Molokini has been voted one of the world’s top 10 favorite snorkel and dive spots. Home to a wide variety of tropical fish, this crescent-shaped islet sits two-and-a-half miles off Maui’s southern coast and rises 156 feet above sea level.

Legend has it that the crescent-shaped isle is the result of a jealous rage. The volcano goddess, Pele, had a dream lover, Lohiau, who lived in Maalaea. Lohiau married a moo (lizard) and in anger, Pele bisected the lizard. The tail became Puuolai Hill in Makena and the head turned into the Molokini islet. There’s no shortage of snorkel tours to this marine life paradise, so make plans to head to deeper water and see the beautiful marine life that call Molokini home.
