Punaluʻu Beach Park

This palm-fringed beach near Naʻālehu, Big Island is commonly known by its nickname, "Black Sand Beach." As the nickname implies, Punaluʻu Beach Park boasts iconic black sand, which is made from jet-black fragments of lava rock. This sand gives the beach a unique, mystical appearance, and is a popular attraction for locals and visitors alike.

In addition to its distinctive black sand, Punaluʻu Beach is also a popular spot to watch green sea turtles lingering near the shore. Turtles are regular residents here, and beachgoers love snapping photos of these majestic creatures on land and at sea!

A word of warning: Punaluʻu Beach Park isn’t an ideal spot for swimming. Because of its frequently strong currents, beachgoers should be cautious when entering the water, especially at high tide or when surf is especially high.

For those looking to sit back, relax and enjoy the sights, Punaluʻu Beach is perfect for picnicking and tidepool exploring. Remember to bring your camera, because you don’t want to miss out on its many picturesque sights!
